CCF Crest
Where else would you be given the opportunity to fly solo in a glider at the age of 16 and/or in a powered aircraft without it costing you a penny?

Think of the look you would get from your friends when you tell them about the exciting time you have had during the school holidays and, of course, you would be able to show off your ‘wings’ on your uniform.

Add to this the opportunity to take part in challenging adventurous training, to be selected to represent your country and school on the International Air Cadet Exchange programme, or the challenge of developing your skills on the Air Cadet Leadership Course.

And for the Best Cadet throughout the year there is the chance to win the coveted Sir John Thomson Memorial Sword.

WHAT AND WHERE IS THE CCF?

The CCF (Combined Cadet Force) is a national voluntary youth organization sponsored by the Ministry of Defence and based wholly in schools and colleges throughout the UK.

Each CCF contingent is a partnership between the individual school and the MOD. It may consist of one to three sections – Royal Navy (including Royal Marines), Army and of course the Royal Air Force. The Head teacher, however, retains overall responsibility for the conduct and staffing of the contingent; this includes recommending officers and instructors for appointment. Further, the Services provide some resources and training expertise in support of each CCF unit.

WHY would you want to join the CCF at your school and in particular the RAFsection?

As we’ve already said it is FUN and provides a welcome break from the rigours of academic work. Also the CCF will provide YOU with the opportunity to develop your leadership potential in a challenging environment. The training you receive will promote the qualities of responsibility, self-reliance, resourcefulness, endurance and perseverance and most importantly a sense of service to the community. You will need these skills and qualities throughout your working life once you leave school of after university.

WHAT is the commitment?

All contingents meet once a week throughout the term time, normally immediately after school and for a period of one-and-a-half to two hours. In the holidays you will also have the chance to attend annual camp at on a RAF base to see how the Regular Service works. However, the CCF (RAF) is not a recruiting organization for the RAF.

HOW do you join?

Speak to the senior girls and boys at your school who are members of the CCF and find out what they think of the organization. Then contact your RAF Section Commander who will surely sign you up!

WIDEN YOUR HORIZONS…
