BUSY BLACKPOOL SQUADRON AFLOAT IN SCOTLAND

177 (Blackpool Airport) Squadron recently experienced the best that the Sea Cadet Corps has to offer, with a week of Sailing and Power-boating at their National Training Centre in Scotland.

In what has now become an annual event, cadets and staff spent a week at HMS Caledonia, where they attended the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, visited an historic Scottish monument and had a sailing or power-boating course at the Sea Cadet Training centre at Port Edgar.

This year’s Tattoo was affected by the weather, but despite the rain cadets were able to keep up their spirits by watching a firework display from the Castle ramparts. The Sunday morning saw the squadron venture back into Edinburgh by train where they were treated to free entry into the Castle, courtesy of Historic Scotland.

The real fun started on the Monday morning when cadets were afloat in Pico and Bosun sail boats, whilst staff members took part in power-boat training. Clad in spray suits and buoyancy aids, with experienced Sea Cadet trainee instructors in the boats to start with, all the cadets were refreshed with the drills, including the capsize.

The week should have finished with a sailing passage, but the sea state was too high and the wind too strong for the activity to go ahead. Instead cadets were treated to a day out on the rigid raider and RIB powerboats.
