ROYTON SQUADRON ACHIEVE NORTH NOMINATION FOR LEES TROPHY

1855 (Royton) Squadron have been named as one of the leading competitors for this year’s prestigious ‘Lees Trophy’ Award.

The Lees Trophy, which is named after Air Marshal Sir Alan Lees KCB CBE DSO AFC is awarded annually for the best Air Training Corps Squadron in the whole of the UK . Royton squadron will represent North Region and compete against nominated units from the other five regions that make up the Air Cadet Organization.

This will be the second “shot” at this award for the cadets of 1855 Squadron who were previously nominated in 2004. Described as “natural winners”, they recently picked up the Public Relations Trophy and were awarded the Duke of Edinburgh Shield at the Training Day Competition in April. The latter proved to be a huge achievement, with all 22 Squadrons in East Lancashire Wing competing against each other, testing elements of Aircraft Recognition, Drill Sequence, Simulated First-Aid and Target Shooting training skills.

Squadron Commander of 1855 Squadron, Flight Lieutenant Mark Hamilton felt that the nomination was a superb achievement. He said: “I am delighted that the squadron has been awarded this nomination. The cadets and staff are really looking forward to going one stage further and hopefully winning the trophy.”

Commanding Officer of East Lancashire Wing, Wing Commander Roy Catterall said: “As the commanding officer of East Lancashire Wing I’m extremely proud of 1855 (Royton) Squadron. They are born winners and deserve to be the North Region’s nominees for this prestigious Trophy.”
