COMMANDANT VISITS ROYTON SQUADRON
Cadets and staff from 1855 (Royton) Squadron were recently visited by Commandant Air Cadets, Air Commodore Ian Stewart, as part of an assessment for the ‘Lees Trophy’ Award.

Air Commodore Stewart, accompanied by the Mayor of Oldham, Councillor Shoab Akhtar, was shown the many varied activities which the Royton cadets are involved with. These included Archery, Fieldcraft, Aero-modelling, Radio Communications, Rifle Shooting, Duke of Edinburgh Award Activities, Physical Education, and a demonstration by the Squadron Marching Band. The squadron Flight Simulator was demonstrated and featured a flight across Manchester in an RAF Eurofighter fast jet.
Air Commodore Stewart was particularly interested in the simulator as his flying career has included BAE Hawk and Tornado F3 interceptor jets. The Lees Trophy is named after Air Marshal Sir Alan Lees KCB CBE DSO AFC. It is awarded annually for the best Air Training Corps Squadron in the whole of the UK , with Royton Squadron acting as the North Region nomination.
In his address to the cadets, staff and parents, Air Commodore Stewart said that he was impressed by his welcome to 1855 Squadron. He congratulated the Squadron’s Commanding Officer, Flight Lieutenant Mark Hamilton and all the volunteers who had contributed so much time and energy to the squadron’s success.
The squadron competes with five other squadrons from across the corps for the coveted Trophy and also The Lees Special Gliding Award, which comprises Gliding Scholarships for 12 cadets, in addition to a cash prize award.
