RAF OUTREACH TEAM MOTIVATES HATFIELD AIR CADETS

Building pneumatic rockets, climbing through hoops and punching numbers were just a few of the activities recently enjoyed by cadets from Hatfield, when the RAF Motivational Outreach Team visited.

2203 (Hatfield & de Havilland) Squadron had invited the RAF Team to deliver motivational and leadership activities tailored to suit the 13-18 year olds. Cadet Rhys Llewellyn, 17, expressed his views on a task where cadets formed a circle holding hands, and then had to pass a Hula Hoop around the circle without letting go. "It's about confidence. Without confidence you have no team," he said.

The cadets fared well enough to earn themselves a selection of RAF rewards including pens and Frisbees. These prizes provided an additional incentive to excel at each subsequent task set by Corporal Steph Young of the team.

Recently enrolled cadet Andrew Cochrane, 13, said: "I loved making the rocket. We worked in pairs and competed against each other to come up with the best aerodynamic and colourful designs. At the launch pad, there was lots of friendly rivalry as we competed to get the highest flight."

Squadron Training Officer, Sgt Graham Hadaway thanked the team. He said: "It is clear that the young cadets have benefited. They had to communicate effectively and share ideas in order to solve the problem scenarios presented. It was also good too for our squadron staff, as we gained some ideas for activities we could run in the future, and an approach for keeping things fun.”

Based at RAF Halton, the Motivational Outreach Team have expanded their visibility by setting up a Mobile Recruiting Office in town centres across Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire.
