MARC'S CAREER PROSPECTS TAKE FLIGHT

A cadet from 220 (St Albans) Squadron has seen his career aspirations take a huge step towards reality, after being awarded a place at the prestigious Welbeck Defence Sixth Form College.

Marc de Vos, 16, a Corporal at 220 Sqn, is now on track to become an engineering officer in the Royal Air Force after being offered a place at the heavily-oversubscribed Loughborough boarding college.

Operated jointly by the Royal Navy, Army and RAF, Welbeck offers a science and technology-based A-level curriculum, tailored specifically to military careers. Cpl de Vos, who is currently taking his GCSEs at Beaumont School in St Albans, is likely to be studying maths, further maths, physics and electronics when he starts in September. After his two years at Welbeck he will then be sent to university to study for an engineering degree, after which he will start his officer training at RAF Cranwell.

Having been an air cadet at 220 Sqn for three years, Cpl de Vos gained his place at Welbeck after taking part in a tough selection procedure at the RAF's Officer and Aircrew Selection Centre, at Cranwell. The selection board were impressed with his aptitude and leadership abilities, as well as his academic performance and achievements within the Air Cadet Organization.

Marc said: "When I found out I had been offered a place at Welbeck it was like all my Christmases had come at once. To be an engineering officer in the RAF is my one career ambition and now I am on course to achieve that. My experiences as an Air Cadet really helped at the selection process. Not only has the past three years been great fun but it has helped put me on track to my dream job."

Flying Officer Ben Wilkinson of 220 (St Albans) Squadron said: "We're all really proud of what Marc has achieved. He has been an excellent cadet and I'm sure he will make an absolutely first class engineer in the Royal Air Force."
