CADETS TACKLE CAMBRIAN MOUNTAINS IN QUEST FOR GOLD

A group of cadets from Warwickshire and Birmingham wing recently completed a gruelling trek in a bid to achieve the prestigious Gold Duke of Edinburgh award.

The 50 mile adventure covered some of Wales ’ magnificent reservoirs, hills and woodlands, whilst providing the team with one of the toughest challenges they will ever face. Overall 13 cadets successfully navigated their way through valleys, lakes and mountains with the assistance of support staff from the Air Training Corps and Royal Air Force.

Cadet Warrant Officer Charlotte Newman of 1289 (Stratford Upon Avon) Squadron, who is currently training as an outdoor instructor, commented on the remoteness of the area and the challenges encountered. She said: “It was a real challenge for everyone involved. The area was extremely remote and forced the whole group to give their all”. Charlotte along with many others has now completed the last stage of the Gold Duke of Edinburgh award. It is expected that those involved will soon be receiving an invite to attend an award ceremony at St James Palace, in recognition of their outstanding achievement.

Warrant Officer Keir Hart of 495 (Sutton Coldfield) squadron, who organised and assessed the event, felt that it had been a tremendous success, saying: “This has been another successful year at the training facility at Elan valley. The centre has allowed the cadets to achieve the Duke of Edinburgh Awards, by undertaking expeditions in some of the remotest and mentally challenging parts of Wales . I strongly encourage everyone to ‘Venture Adventure’ at Elan Valley .”
