CADETS ARE BIG WINNERS IN RACE FOR LIFE
Cadets and staff members recently turned out in force to support a Cancer Research UK Race for Life weekend. In total Forty four members of the Air Cadet Organisation from four squadrons, Pontefract Castleford, Knottingley and South Elmsall pitched in at Pontefract Race Course to ensure the event ran smoothly.

In a strong show of support for the event one staff member, an ardent Leeds United fan, even sold his coveted ticket to football’s league one play off final at Wembley in order to be there. Sergeant (ATC) Luke Harvey said: “I had the chance to go to Wembley to see my team, but this event was so important I sold my ticket to a friend. I didn’t even make a profit on it and considering Doncaster Rovers beat us, 1-0, I’m really glad I stayed to help.”
Cadet duties on the day included helping to set up the course, prepare the finishing funnels, move 5000 bottles of water, goodie bags and medals for the thousands of participants in the races. As the first participants began to arrive, the course was finished, manned and ready to go. After a warm up session led by the “Nivea Cheer Leaders”, the primary race set off with the runners behind a huge blue flag carried by one of the lucky cadets.

After a quick lunch, a few photographs and a FOD PLOD (litter sweep), the team rotated and again manned the start/finish and course for the second race at 2.30. The race went well and the staff and cadets worked their socks off to keep pace with the events.
Project Officer, North Region Media Communications Officer, Squadron Leader Mike Wadsworth was delighted with the effort of the cadets. He said: “The whole team worked hard all day in support of the event. Just as important was the impression left by the staff and cadets on the thousands of racers and supporters, many of whom were kind enough to say how well they had done. It was a superb team effort and I was immensely proud of them all.” Event organiser for Cancer Research UK , Helen Nassau added: “Without the help of the Air Cadets, this event would not have worked. They were fantastic.”
