Air Commodore Stewart said: “Receiving a NATO medal is rare so I feel very honoured - I believe there are only a few other recipients in the UK . I was with NATO in Ramstein until 2006 and I worked with people from such diverse backgrounds that it was a tremendous opportunity. Trying to achieve peace and stability in Europe was fundamental."

"I led a division of 85 people and I was also the senior national representative for nearly 100 UK personnel. I was detached to Afghanistan for five months and worked in the NATO HQ for three and a half years."

The citation read at the ceremony said that Air Commodore Stewart had distinguished himself by the outstanding manner in which he performed in his “complex and demanding” appointment at NATO.

The citation continued: “He led his A3 Division impeccably and has been fiercely defensive and caring of all personnel under his command. As one of the first CC-Air HQ NATO officers to deploy to Afghanistan he was instrumental in creating the Air Task Force Tactical Air Operations Centre and continued to drive through significant improvement to the ISAF (International Security Assistance Force) Air mission. In sum, he made a remarkable contribution to NATO and has been an outstanding ambassador for his country.”
